    π\pi-Electron Ferromagnetism in Metal Free Carbon Probed by Soft X-Ray Dichroism

    Elemental carbon represents a fundamental building block of matter and the possibility of ferromagnetic order in carbon attracted widespread attention. However, the origin of magnetic order in such a light element is only poorly understood and has puzzled researchers. We present a spectromicroscopy study at room temperature of proton irradiated metal free carbon using the elemental and chemical specificity of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We demonstrate that the magnetic order in the investigated system originates only from the carbon π\pi-electron system.Comment: 10 pages 3 color figure

    Analysis of the Copenhagen Accord pledges and its global climatic impacts‚ a snapshot of dissonant ambitions

    This analysis of the Copenhagen Accord evaluates emission reduction pledges by individual countries against the Accord's climate-related objectives. Probabilistic estimates of the climatic consequences for a set of resulting multi-gas scenarios over the 21st century are calculated with a reduced complexity climate model, yielding global temperature increase and atmospheric CO2 and CO2-equivalent concentrations. Provisions for banked surplus emission allowances and credits from land use, land-use change and forestry are assessed and are shown to have the potential to lead to significant deterioration of the ambition levels implied by the pledges in 2020. This analysis demonstrates that the Copenhagen Accord and the pledges made under it represent a set of dissonant ambitions. The ambition level of the current pledges for 2020 and the lack of commonly agreed goals for 2050 place in peril the Accord's own ambition: to limit global warming to below 2 °C, and even more so for 1.5 °C, which is referenced in the Accord in association with potentially strengthening the long-term temperature goal in 2015.     Transgender Transitioning and Change of Self-Reported Sexual Orientation

    Objective: Sexual orientation is usually considered to be determined in early life and stable in the course of adulthood. In contrast, some transgender individuals report a change in sexual orientation. A common reason for this phenomenon is not known. Methods: We included 115 transsexual persons (70 male-to-female "MtF" and 45 female-to-male "FtM") patients from our endocrine outpatient clinic, who completed a questionnaire, retrospectively evaluating the history of their gender transition phase. The questionnaire focused on sexual orientation and recalled time points of changes in sexual orientation in the context of transition. Participants were further asked to provide a personal concept for a potential change in sexual orientation. Results: In total, 32.9% (n = 23) MtF reported a change in sexual orientation in contrast to 22.2% (n = 10) FtM transsexual persons (p = 0.132). Out of these patients, 39.1% (MtF) and 60% (FtM) reported a change in sexual orientation before having undergone any sex reassignment surgery. FtM that had initially been sexually oriented towards males (= androphilic), were significantly more likely to report on a change in sexual orientation than gynephilic, analloerotic or bisexual FtM (p = 0.012). Similarly, gynephilic MtF reported a change in sexual orientation more frequently than androphilic, analloerotic or bisexual MtF transsexual persons (p = 0.05). Conclusion: In line with earlier reports, we reveal that a change in self-reported sexual orientation is frequent and does not solely occur in the context of particular transition events. Transsexual persons that are attracted by individuals of the opposite biological sex are more likely to change sexual orientation. Qualitative reports suggest that the individual's biography, autogynephilic and autoandrophilic sexual arousal, confusion before and after transitioning, social and self-acceptance, as well as concept of sexual orientation itself may explain this phenomenon

    Phosphorus donors in highly strained silicon

    The hyperfine interaction of phosphorus donors in fully strained Si thin films grown on virtual Si1−x_{1-x}Gex_x substrates with x≤0.3x\leq 0.3 is determined via electrically detected magnetic resonance. For highly strained epilayers, hyperfine interactions as low as 0.8 mT are observed, significantly below the limit predicted by valley repopulation. Within a Green's function approach, density functional theory (DFT) shows that the additional reduction is caused by the volume increase of the unit cell and a local relaxation of the Si ligands of the P donor.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    The final state in The final state in heavy-ion collisions has a higher degree of strangeness saturation than the one produced in collisions between elementary particles like p-p or p-pˉ\bar{p}. A systematic analysis of this phenomenon is made for C-C, Si-Si and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN SPS collider and for Au−AuAu-Au collisions at RHIC and at AGS energies.     A Reduced Nonlinear Model for the Simulation of Two Phase Flow in a Horizontal Pipe.

    In the last 10 years many 3D numerical schemes have been developed for the study the flow of a mixture of liquid and gas in a pipeline (Frank, Numerical simulation of slug flow regime for an air-water two-phase flow in horizontal pipes. In: The 11th international topical meeting on nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics (NURETH-11), Avignon, 2005; Vallée et al., Nucl Eng Des 238(3):637–646, 2008; Höhne, Experiments and numerical simulations of horizontal two-phase flow regimes. In: Proceeding of the seventh international conference on CFD in the minerals and process industries, Melbourne, 2009; Bartosiewicz et al., Nucl Eng Des 240(9):2375–2381, 2010) but although they offer a very good accuracy, they are rarely fit for modelling a long pipe, due to the high computational costs. Then one is usually led to consider 1D models, see e.g. the works of Issa and his group (Issa and Kempf, Int J Multiphase Flow 29(1):69–95, 2003). Such models offer much faster simulations than 3D schemes, on the other hand they almost completely miss the dynamics in the transversal direction. Here we present a model able of representing the full 3D dynamics, but with the computational cost typical of 1D simulation. The main feature of our model consists in describing the dynamical variables in the direction transversal to the pipe by means of a family of functions depending on a set of parameters. The model is then solved by a standard finite volume scheme

    When Grades Are High but Self-Efficacy Is Low : Unpacking the Confidence Gap Between Girls and Boys in Mathematics

    Girls have much lower mathematics self-efficacy than boys, a likely contributor to the under-representation of women in STEM. To help explain this gender confidence gap, we examined predictors of mathematics self-efficacy in a sample of 1,007 9th graders aged 13–18 years (54.2% girls). Participants completed a standardized math test, after which they rated three indices of mastery: an affective component (state self-esteem), a meta-cognitive component (self-enhancement), and their prior math grade. Despite having similar grades, girls reported lower mathematics self-efficacy and state self-esteem, and were less likely than boys to self-enhance in terms of performance. Multilevel multiple-group regression analyses showed that the affective mastery component explained girls’ self-efficacy while cognitive self-enhancement explained boys’. Yet, a chi-square test showed that both constructs were equally relevant in the prediction of girls’ and boys’ self-efficacy. Measures of interpersonal sources of self-efficacy were not predictive of self-efficacy after taking the other dimensions into account. Results suggest that boys are advantaged in their development of mathematics self-efficacy beliefs, partly due to more positive feelings and more cognitive self-enhancement following test situations. © Copyright © 2020 Zander, Höhne, Harms, Pfost and Hornsey

    A comparison of the magnetic properties of Proton- and Iron-implanted graphite

    In this work we have investigated the changes of the magnetic properties of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples after irradiation either with ∼3×1014\sim 3 \times 10^{14} protons or 3.5×1013...3.5×1014 3.5 \times 10^{13} ... 3.5 \times 10^{14} iron ions with energies in the MeV range. Our results show that iron and proton irradiations can produce similar paramagnetic contributions depending on the implantation temperature.
